In his native France, Pierre Woodman may or may not be considered a porn director with a really popular distinguishable style. I have the feeling that American viewers are supposed to believe he is as popular as, say, John Stagliano, Andrew Blake, Michael Raven or Tanya Hyde. To this reviewer though, Woodman is a capable director and, really, at his best when shooting for stills rather than film. In fact, some of the more intriguing scenes from the Superfuckers series occur when the cameras go behind the scenes of a still shoot. More on that later.

Like a good number of Europeanmore… directors being bankrolled by large porn corporations, Woodman has the clout to bring together some of the better looking talent in the world and have them do their thing in sexy, exotic locations. For the most part. Even the best directors can hit or miss, and Woodman's main shortcoming is a lack of consistent quality from scene to scene leading a viewer to perhaps think he is watching a compilation reel of many directors' work. Camera quality changes, lighting changes, location changes all prevent Woodman’s work from looking truly polished, but he does succeed on some levels. If you have a taste for Continental smut, Superfuckers delivers when it comes to serving up European flair and an amalgam of sexy ladies from the carnal strip that seems to have developed out of former Eastern Block countries. To some viewers though, "European" may sound like code for goofy or cheesy and while that element is present there's another element here that fits the stereotype that babes from overseas are incredibly uninhibited.

Get past the bizarre, accented Euro-pop Superfuckers theme song, and the first images are of a young Asian woman billed as Pokahontas. No one seems to have notified Wodman or Pokahontas that on video the images move because the longest portions of her introductions are shot with perfectly still camera and the model frozen solid. Again, I have to attribute this to Woodman's real desire to be shooting stills rather than video. Pokahontas, whatever her nationality, is dubbed so stupendously badly, but it would be a miracle that any sound escape her toothy, non-moving mouth.

The first scene features a very cute blonde Russian called Angel (the real "star" of the box cover) being double-teamed by a couple of men. The non-sensical setup involves Woodman behind the camera enticing the cutie to dance a striptease right there in the kitchen. Unannounced, two more men show up just as Angel is nude on the countertop. The sex begins, and pretty much stays the same, all while on top of this uncomfortable, conventional countertop. It's here that you can get a taste for Wodman's "style" which inserts numerous anatomical closeups in favor of anything really flattering to his all-too-cute starlet.

Among the more interesting scenes in Superfuckers are those which actually take place behind-the-scenes of a Woodman photo shoot. The first entry is a poolside plunge with Hungarian model Gaby Marceau for Barely Legal hardcore magazine. Gaby and her stud model engage in every possible position, including anal, in front of Woodman's lens, and we are treated to the relaxed but sexy atmosphere by a gorgeous Spanish villa. In this context, the bold closeups really work, and even if it's bizarre to see models posing perfectly still in the middle of what would have most people bumping and grinding, panting and moaning, it's still pretty hot. Just to keep the pace going, there are some amsuing little "Pop Up Video" style messages superimposed during the scene. It's ironic that the total lack of a setup - the "all in a day's work" attitude - is actually the most effective and intriguing of all the scenarios cooked up for this video.

From a Spanish pool to an air mattress in a dingy living room, Russian Lyudmilla has the deer-caught-in-the-headlights look as she answers barely perceptible questions from Woodman. One could easily question if she knows where she is or what she's in for, but she seems to handle her two male partners rather well. Next up, a little light SM between Dora and Orsolya which leads into girl/girl action of thumbs, toys and tongues. Woodman tends in this scene to find a shot he likes and then sticks with it rather than break up the pacing, but these two brunettes are easy to watch in their Sapphic tryst.

Sandra Russo lucked out in the next scene since her sex scene is in another gorgeous Mediterranean location. This is another magazine hardcore still shoot which, again, is more effective than most of Woodman's film work. Sandra is a very cute blonde who is as accommodating to her two men as she is to the camera crew. Call me weird, but it's even kind of hot to watch them stop in mid-scene for the makeup artist to come along and touch up her crotch. Finally, Brazilian Annett and her staggering breasts are found by Woodman working in a stockroom, and it's literally moments before she's completely naked. Her "boss" shows up and registers his shock at the situation by having sex with her among the piles of books and boxes. All in a day's work.

The DVD contains basic extras: stills, previews, a web link and a short interview with the director. Hustler unveils another "correspondent" to talk to Woodman about his work, his history and the number of women he has played with (2,450, but who's counting?). It's hard to recommend this DVD for the director's style because, truthfully, he doesn't have much of one. Overall, it reads more like a higher-end compilation reel. If you like hardcore with a vaguely European flair and a good number of closeups on unknown Baltic cuties, Superfuckers delivers.
