I happen to love Private flicks. Not only do their movies have some of the sexiest women I've ever seen performing some of the naughtiest conduct imaginable, but their DVDs are generally first rate productions in both video and sound. (Admittedly, the overdubbing is annoying, but what can one do?) Whether it's a big-budget, ambitious feature like PRIVATE GLADIATOR, or a less grandiose project such as BRIDES AND BITCHES, their erotic entertainment value is almost second to none. And while not every title is an absolute winner, the overwhelming majority of the Private line is usually way abovemore… the average.

Having noted that, I have to admit to being less than thoroughly enchanted by the second volume of the three-part feature presentation known as PRIVATE GLADIATOR 2. Perhaps it's because I haven't yet had the chance to watch the first part prior to reviewing part two, or perhaps I just don't care for the source material, or perhaps I'm just a jaded, spoiled bastard, but PRIVATE GLADIATOR 2: IN THE CITY OF LUST doesn't impress as much as I thought it would. After sitting through this epic tale once just to get a sense of the story (which wasn't worth paying that much attention to, as it turns out), I found myself far more entertained during a repeated viewing just by focusing on the hardcore and speed searching through all the ponderous exposition and so-called action scenes. Though the dialogue carries the story, the overdubbing ironically recalls those ridiculously cheesy sword-and-sandal Italian-import films which used to play on late night television (before the advent of cable and satellite television). And certainly, the coliseum fights won't make Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jet Li lose sleep over their status as action heroes, though I have to commend for Private for giving it the old college try. At least they're trying to do something novel and different, instead of going the ultra cheap gonzo route adopted by the majority of the studios.

Since we're dealing with the second of a three-act play, there's not that much to say about the story other than the viewer continues to follow Maximus (played by Tony Ribas) in his rise as a hero to Rome. Like its mainstream counterpart, GLADIATOR 2 sets audiences up for the inevitable battle between Maximus and Commodus, but the story leaves that ultimate confrontation for part three. Unless you really care about following the story, it seems that all three flicks stand on their own as satisfying, jerk-off material, though pornophiles would rather get the whole "trilogy" to complete the collection.

None of the combat scenes, CGI sets, or drama is incredibly convincing, but GLADIATOR does its best within the budget limitations of the X-rated genre. So if you're expecting cinematic quality on the level of the Ridley Scott flick (and is it me, or did that movie amount to little more than a glorified version of CONAN THE BARBARIAN? But I digress...) then you're bound to be disappointed. At least director Antonio Adamo forgoes any attempt to enhance the visuals, with special effects of color changes (a practice which was previously overused in his other works). Thus, you get beautiful bodies and graphic conduct unhindered by any overly flashy enhancements. However, I will say that GLADIATOR 2 looks no worse than the infamous CALIGULA, which was shot-on-film on a significantly larger budget (no doubt due in part to the salaries of the high profile actors who appeared in that Tinto Brass-directed, Penthouse production). I also have to admit to being impressed with the musical score, which is as close to Hans Zimmer as you're going to get in dirty movies.

Though the trailer is presented in letterbox format (masking the top and bottom of the screen), the movie itself is not, which is fine by me since I don't care for reduced porno images on my non-widescreen television. Perhaps this movie would have had a more prestigious and epic feel had it been shot on film and in a 2:35 to 1 ratio, but no amount of artistic integrity in adult film composition means a damn if the hardcore is mediocre.

And speaking of hardcore, the bottom line question arises...just how good is the sex in GLADIATOR 2? Well, for an Antonio Adamo flick, I have to say that it's pretty average, which still means that it's excellent when compared to any other porn disc from any other pornographer. The director serves up six, full-length (no pun intended) scenes with plenty of double-penetration, anal, rim jobs, and straight actions as you might expect. There are at least ten different straight couplings going on, and two very arousing girl-girl segments within all six segments. Co-star Rita Faltoyano appears in two straight encounters, while drop-dead gorgeous creatures like Cleare, Tchanka, and Julia (obviously, last names aren't as common in Europe as they are in the states) are sexually active during their respective fifteen minutes of GLADIATOR 2 fame. As for Rita, while she looks simply ravishing throughout, I must point out that the very prominent moles on her chest are somewhat distracting, especially when they are so obvious under the bright lighting.

Sophie Evans makes an appearance as a reddish brunette in a trio of couplings highlighted by blonde beauty Cynthia, who could easily pass for a close cousin of Sarah Michelle Gellar. She gets involved in an interracial affair while Sophie works her charms on another guy, as dark-haired beauties Lisa and Nike trade licks on their lower regions. As this scene indicates, GLADIATOR 2 gives us as much bang for the buck when it comes to the all-important fucking and sucking moments, so there's never a hardcore moment where you feel cheated in terms of quantity or quality of action. What I did miss, however, was the opportunity to watch some explicit cum-swapping or other forms of 21st Century nastiness. (Truth be told, Esther Virgin and Black Widow do share a somewhat messy kiss at the end of their mini-orgy, but it's not nearly as lewdly wet as a true raincoater might expect.) If tattoos, piercings, oral cumshots, and pile-driving ass-fucking can be so obviously displayed in this flick, why not semen-laden kisses and swallowing?

The production of the DVD and the extras are excellent, from the animated menu of a coliseum, to the crystal clear photo gallery, to the behind the scenes materials, which includes a nearly thirty-minute documentary that is almost as good as what you get from mainstream discs. However, it appears as though this featurette is the same one you get from the first PRIVATE GLADIATOR opus, which means that if you intend on collecting both, or all three, discs, some of the extras will definitely be redundant.

While an excellent effort, PRIVATE GLADIATOR 2 isn't my top choice when it comes to picking the best and brightest of titles from the studio catalog. But if you liked the first film, then picking up the follow-up is a true no-brainer.
