In most cases, porn versions of popular films or televisions shows are cheap attempts to profit from mainstream name recognition. Jewel Raider is a rare exception. While it does borrow heavily from the Tomb Raider material, the movie is much more than a cheap hardcore adaptation. In addition to the expected sex scenes, the movie provides some well choreographed fight scenes, and a tight storyline that keeps things moving along at a quick pace. Playing the lead role of Laura Croff is relative "new cummer" and former Penthouse Pet, Venus. Jewel Raider marks her first boy/girl experiencemore… as well as director Jay Jeff’s first foray into adult filmmaking.
Similar to its source material, the story centers around a wealthy young woman named Laura Croff. Ms. Croff has a knack for collecting rare artifacts and lets nothing deter her from her objective. In this adventure, she’s after an artifact of potential extraterrestrial origin. Unfortunately, the object is possessed by a wealthy crime lord, Jeremy Cross (Mike Horner).
The movie opens as Laura concludes a successful heist. After fighting her way to safety, she heads back to HQ to compare notes with her assistant Alan, played by Voodoo. Feeling a bit frisky after her dangerous mission, Laura opts to put off the debriefing until she’s had her way with Alan. The action here is pretty basic and a little long as Venus gets some oral attention before taking Voodoo’s condom clad cock into her impatient pussy. For a beginner, Venus demonstrates some impressive talent for fellatio, handling Voodoo’s huge cock proficiently. She’s rewarded with a geyser of man juice, which mainly hits her chin and neck. In an attempt to discover the hidden location of Mr. Cross’ unique artifact, Laura goes undercover as a dominatrix. Unaware of her true identity, Cross hires Laura to “punish” one of his servants (Dominica Leoni) that accidentally uncovered one of his secret rooms. Laura uses this opportunity to “interrogate” this girl with the help of some toys and bondage paraphernalia. Thanks to the narrative edge, this scene is kept interesting throughout as Laura basically fucks the information out of her. She even gets a little attention in return. For a girl/girl scene, this is pretty damn hot.
Now that Laura has the location of Mr. Cross’ hidden treasure room, she heads off with Alan to infiltrate and retrieve the mysterious artifact. Following some intense kung-fu, Alan stumbles into a bizarre room that looks like a theater...kind of like the stage set in Kid Sparkle’s House of Freaks. There he finds a tall blonde (Nicole Sheridan) whose sexual allure is too much for Alan to overcome. Instead of using guns or kung-fu, the two struggle to fuck each other into submission. First, Voodoo concentrates on licking her twat, but Nicole regains her composure, drops to her knees, and proceeds to inhale his huge cock. She even hocks a wad of spit between her big breasts and lets him titty fuck her. The two eventually move on to some pretty intense penetration including a hot anal reverse cowgirl. Voodoo finally pulls out of her well stretched ass and jerks a big load onto her stomach. Apparently Alan won this fight because the dangerous blonde faints soon after the climax. Perplexed, he proceeds with his victory speech: “Beautiful and aggressive…that’s a dangerous combination.”
Laura and Alan clear out all of Cross’ thugs during an intense gun fight, after which Laura heads straight for Cross. She finds him in his bizarre trophy room/bar where he is keeping the mysterious object Laura is after. Like in the previous scene, the two set aside the traditional showdown antics and engage in a carnal battle of supremacy. While Laura has Cross’ head pinched between her thighs, he munches away on her crotch. Later, Laura pins Cross down and aggressively sucks his cock. He counters by pinning her and fucking her with his now erect penis. Cross seems to have the upper hand as he bends Laura over the bar and fucks her from behind. In a weak attempt to “finish her off” Cross dribbles a small load of jizz across her tits. Defending herself (and the integrity of the production) against this weak display, Laura exclaims, “You Suck!” and smashes him in the face with a right jab...I hope this sets a precedent for weak pop shots.
If it’s not already apparent, I really liked this movie. It’s not common to see an adult feature merge its sex scenes seamlessly into the story. Keep in mind the story is pretty lightweight, but it’s more than enough given the scope of the movie. While the fight scenes aren’t quite up to the same level of a Hollywood or Hong Kong production, the effort is simply unparalleled in the world of adult films. Some of this stuff even looks better than the dismal crap seen in most television shows. Although I was nearly yawning after the first sex scene, the pace really quickened in the following three. Most hardcore fans will appreciate the adversarial approach of Nicole Sheridan and Voodoo’s encounter, not to mention the final showdown between Laura and Mr. Cross. Finally, the movie certainly benefits from its source material. Anyone familiar with the video game (not the disappointing mainstream movie) will be drooling once they see Venus suited up in the familiar short shorts, dual pistols, and turquoise top.
Despite my enthusiasm for this movie, there are a number of jump cuts, continuity errors, and other editing problems that keep it from attaining a perfect score. For example, when Jeremy Cross gets out of his limo during his visit to Laura’s estate, the sky is light blue indicating daylight. Apparently Laura’s walkway to her front door is quite long because by the time Mr. Cross gets there the sun has nearly set. The transitional shots between scenes are also a bit confusing, utilizing quick cuts instead of dissolves or even establishing shots. Right after Cross leaves Laura’s house, there’s a shot of Voodoo looking off to the left of the frame. The next shot shows Cross and his goons walking through some sort of industrial complex. It makes it look like Cross and his men are simply on the other side of the room. Fortunately, a title eventually identifies the setting at the bottom of the screen, verifying the shifting of locales. Last but not least, the locations are spread a little thin. If Cross is such a big shot multi-millionaire, why does he keep his priceless collection or rare artifacts in a cheesily decorated bar inside his power plant? Wouldn’t it make more sense to store this stuff in a big wooden paneled trophy room at his mansion? Individually, these problems are little more than minor annoyances, but their persistence makes the movie looks a little sloppy.
This is easily one of Nu-Tech’s best DVDs to date. Not only is the movie good, but the DVD quality is top notch all around. Given it’s unique CGI rendered menu interface it’s apparent that some serious work went into this title. The picture quality is extremely crisp and only exhibits detectable pixelation in a handful of shots. Likewise, the audio is crisp and well-mixed. The viewer can also choose between Dolby Digital or DTS sound; usually an option found only in mainstream releases. There’s no significant difference between the two formats, and the surround channels seem to be used exclusively for music, but the option is nice. In addition to the usual extras, there’s a nice behind the scenes featurette and a short quiz. The behind the scenes footage runs about 10 minutes long and shows the complicated work behind the fight scenes as well as numerous bloopers.
The porno action genre has received a badly needed jolt with the release of Jewel Raider. I can’t remember seeing an adult feature with such sharp and astute action sequences. While it isn’t quite perfect, I think with some fine tuning, Jewel Raider could easily become a successful adult franchise. After watching this one, I’d certainly buy a sequel.
