One of the most popular and recognized classic titles of all time, Behind The Green Door, has finally made its way onto DVD. Directed by the Mitchell brothers, the movie gave adult viewers their first glimpse at the lovely Marilyn Chambers, who at this young age looks like a cross between Cybill Shepherd and Meg Ryan.

For those of you used to today’s “leave nothing to the imagination” hardcore porn, Behind the Green Door will probably disappoint. This was a age where concentration was on telling a story as much as it was showing the action and while there is somemore… hardcore material in the film, it is neither the quality or quantity current fans are used to seeing in their porn.

The movie opens with two old friends meeting up at a diner, and the chef comes over and asks them both if they are finally going to tell him the story about the “green door”. The men agree, and we flashback to a resort where the two guys are sitting outside talking, and we see Marilyn show up and take a seat at a nearby table. Then, later that night we see Marilyn forced into a car by a couple of guys and taken off to a club…it’s the same club that the two guys go to, and one where all the members must don masks before entering (I wonder if this is where Stanley Kubrick got his idea for Eyes Wide Shut?).

The guys sit with a bunch of other people who are watching a mime perform on stage with a green door in the background. Meanwhile, Marilyn is being seduced backstage by Linda Grant. There’s not really any sexual action here, although Linda does rub her hands across Marilyn’s body…including her breasts. Back on the stage, an announcement is made that the audience is about to see a young woman ravished. The green door opens and Marilyn is led out and into the eager arms of six other women, who give her a pretty good rub down, including some light oral action.

Just when you think the movie is not going to show anything more hardcore than this, black stud Johnnie Keys comes from out behind the door and we not only get the first straight scene of the movie, but an interracial one to boot, which is commonplace today, but probably turned a few heads in the early 70’s, when this title originally came out. The penetration here is shot at such an angle that you can see it taking place, but really can’t get a good look at it. All of the action (other than some opening oral from Johnnie on Marilyn) is in the missionary position, and the viewer never gets to see the cumshot, although we do get a glimpse of Johnnie’s wet cock after withdrawal.

It was at this point in the film that I realized that each hardcore scene was getting more and more graphic in its detail. I wonder if this was something the Mitchell brothers intended to do…luring the viewer into thinking the title was going to be very softcore, and then gradually building up the heat. Next up for Marilyn is a gangbang of sorts, as she sucks a number of guys off while riding the cock of another. In perhaps the most interesting part of the film, we finally get to see the first cumshot, and it is one that the directors linger on for a long time, showing it in slow motion from several different positions and angles. There’s even a psychedelic, “2001: A Space Odyssey”-type of montage for this part of the film, and one that goes on for so long, I wondered if Dave Bowman himself might have been the guy who she was blowing (open the pod bay doors, Marilyn!).

The film concludes with George McDonald (one of the two buddies from the diner) remembering how he too got to screw Marilyn on the night in question. This final scene has some good shots of Ms. Chambers sucking George off, as well as some good penetration shots, but alas, there are no further cumshots to be seen in this film.

The weak point of this DVD is in the features area, with the only real feature being a short slide show, which seems to just be freeze frames of action that can be seen in the movie. There is a chapter selection option, but for some reason, the producers of the disc decided to divide the movie up into only three chapters, which isn’t very helpful if you are searching for a particular part of the movie.

On the other hand, this is one of the better transfers you are going to find of a classic adult title. The transfer seems to have been made directly from the original film (rather than from a videotape), and while the age of the film is obvious and there is plenty of noticeable dirt, lines and even a few audio dropouts, the transfer is the best that could possibly have been done from such an old title without actually putting the film through extensive restoration (something that only mainstream studios have done to date). There is no evidence of grain or other signs of a poor transfer in the finished product.

While the average porn watcher probably isn’t going to be that interested in picking up this title, no serious collector of porn will want to be without this DVD version of the porn classic, and the adult film world’s first appearance of the beautiful Marilyn Chambers.
