It’s rare for me to watch an adult movie and walk away raving about the lead male performance in the film. After all, that’s not what adult film is supposed to be about – it’s about watching beautiful women get nasty on camera…and don’t worry, there’s plenty of that in Heart of Darkness…but Randy Spears does such a fantastic job playing a sex addict who can’t overcome his addiction that AVN should rename the Best Actor award (which he won, by the way) after him. It’s quite simply the best performance Spears has ever given in an adult movie – and that’s saying amore… lot.
And although Vivid Girl Sunrise Adams gets the box cover and does have two impressive scenes in this movie, I found the sexiest performance to be that of Drew Berrymore, who plays a dominatrix that Randy has a relationship with. Drew is so sexually tempting in Heart of Darkness that she should be a poster child for the bondage profession…she made me want to take my hard-earned porn money and go see a dominatrix myself!
Heart of Darkness is directed by Paul Thomas, and may very well be his best feature since the original Bad Wives. Although the film is only a little under 80-minutes in length, I counted no less than 12 sexual situations in the film…almost all of which develop directly from the storyline – rather than being thrown in just for the sake of showing sex on-screen.
Randy Spears plays Johnny, the owner of a popular club whom we first meet making out with what we presume is his girlfriend, Sunrise Adams. But we soon find out that Sunrise is merely an employee of the club, and Randy indulges in a vast amount of sexual activity with a large number of women. After Randy has made out with Sunrise, she gets mad at him because he doesn’t so much as thank her for the good time. This leads to a fight where Sunrise winds up getting fired.
Randy heads home to his wife (Ava Vincent) while Sunrise heads home to her husband (Rafe). Ava has no clue as to whom Randy is fooling around with in his spare time, but Rafe does have some suspicion that Sunrise may be fooling around with Randy…although he believes it is only Randy who is the aggressor in the relationship. While Randy continues his promiscuity – seeing dominatrix Dru and picking up hookers alongside the road, Ava finds out that she is pregnant and about to have Randy’s son.
While he’s pleased that Ava is with child, and running scared after almost getting busted by the police when they barge in on him and hookers Sophie Evans and Nakita Kash, Randy just can’t stop his addiction to having sex with other women. As Dru tells Randy at one point in the film, “It’s your cocaine. Pussy is your drug of choice.”
Randy finds himself in a new relationship with a hooker (Crystal Carter) he meets on the streets. He gets a blowjob from her in an alley, and she later comes to the club for some additional action. Randy is so addicted to sex that he even spends time having phone sex, listening to Jordan Haze masturbate for him in the middle of the night while his wife is sleeping in their bedroom.
But all the pain Randy is causing others eventually catches up to him. There is a price for his indiscretions, and he gets his just desserts at the end of Heart of Darkness. Is he a bad guy? Is he a lost soul? Director Paul Thomas doesn’t give us an easy way out by making Randy’s character evil. In fact, he seems like a guy you could know…a guy you could be friends with…or – gulp! – perhaps even yourself!
Because Heart of Darkness was shot on film, it gets a good – but not perfect – transfer to the digital format on this DVD. For the most part, the picture is in good shape, although there are the occasional hints of dirt and grain that make it impossible to give the DVD an excellent rating in the video department. The audio rates about the same as the video – with a solid 2.0 track that sounds fine, although one wishes Vivid would go back to releasing all their features in 5.1 Dolby as they used to.
Sunrise Adams fans should be happy with the bonus material, as three of the five bonus scenes (par for the course with any Vivid Feature DVD) feature Sunrise in performances from other Vivid releases. Other girls included in these bonus scenes are Savanna Samson, Dee, Taylor St. Clair and Dru Berrymore. Additional extras include a 7 ½ minute behind the scenes featurette; trailers for other titles; a Sunrise Adams biography; two slide shows and multiple angles for select scenes within the film.
Well-written adult material is a rare thing these days, and good material with equally good performances is even more rare. Heart of Darkness deserved its many AVN Awards, and it deserves something else as well: a permanent spot in any adult fan’s collection.
