Having completely missed the first episode, it's a somewhat daunting task to catch up on this convoluted story. Fortunately, Private has included a short recap, but I'm not sure it does the complex story justice. We get glimpses of a wedding, mentions of social climbing, bankruptcy, and a mysterious map. The recap concludes with a murdered man sprawled out by a pool. Given all the trimmings of a soap opera in sweeps, this next episode should be juicy.
This installment starts off on a yacht cruising along the Mediterranean coast as a photographer takes some shots of Gina Blonde. It's unclearmore… how this all fits into the story, but it's still nice to watch the Euro-blonde pull aside her blue dress to reveal her fine tits and ass. Like any photo shoot in a porno, the photographer ends up nailing the model. The scenic backdrop is a nice touch to an otherwise bland sex scene. Still, Gina does take it up the ass and even gets a sticky facial at the end.
The murder of the lawyer in the previous episode has prompted the lead investigator to seek help from an outsider. Apparently he feels Lydia, a striking brunette, is the right woman for the job. After Lydia arrives in small airplane, the investigator impresses upon her the importance of solving this case quickly. Otherwise, the wine region's tourism business will suffer.
At the Chateau, Dora Venter (the maid) has taken it upon herself to teach newlywed and sexually timid Maria (Victoria Swinger) how to please her new husband. He wants to get together and have dinner…in the next episode?
Back at the chateau, Maria's new husband still can't seem to get enough action. This time he nails Dora as Maria listens from a nearby bedroom and cries into her pillow. But underneath her pillow she finds a note. What's it say? Maria ends the episode with a voice-over. She'll be looking elsewhere for love, but who's the lucky guy?
Private has always put out great discs, and this title does its best to live up to that tradition. Like most of their major features, this one is presented in a 16:9 anamorphic wide screen format. It's a nice image, but the picture doesn't look quite as crisp or vibrant as it should be. In fact, some scenes look downright blurry and overexposed. Still, the intentional soft look of the video is carried by a very competent transfer, with barely a visible blemish. The dubbed audio tracks of Private's movies are usually dreadful, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of the title is spoken in English. Some of the actors still had to be dubbed, but most of them pulled off English rather well. However, the stereo format still falls short of the impressive 5.1 mixes found in many of the other major features. French, German, Spanish, and Italian audio tracks are also provided. The 20-minute "Making Of" featurette is most likely the same one that appeared on the first disc. Still, it's worth a look if you haven't seen it. The rest of the extras are pretty generic, including the movie's trailer, cast profiles, movie photos, backstage photos, production notes, and six trailers for other Private productions.
Private Chateau 2: A Shady Past is heavy on story and maybe just a little too light on sex. The six sex scenes provided are all decent, but none of them really make this title a must see. That said, I'm never disappointed by the ambition surrounding these mega-Private productions. Not only is this a refreshingly intricate story, but the on-location Spanish locales give the whole movie an elegant look most domestic productions could only dream of. With the exception of the first scene, the location serves the story, helping establish a greater sense of credibility and cohesion. The mix of storytelling, sex, and lavish production values make this one checking out. But I would recommend starting with the first episode before trying to decipher this one.
