Paul Thomas’ Dinner Party is in no way related to the famous 1994 Ultimate release by Cameron Grant which combined the pleasures of sex and food. Instead, this gonzo release has Thomas filming a number of porn stars (including Monique Alexander and Steven St. Croix) at dinner, talking about their careers and what turns them on the most. In between the conversations, we get to see the performers in sexual action with each other.
The biggest problem with Dinner Party is that the conversations the actors are having is much more interesting than any of the sex we see. Outmore… of the seven sex scenes in the movie, three are solo masturbation scenes, and the remaining four sex scenes are rather vanilla in tone, with not one facial cumshot in the bunch. With that being said, though, Dinner Party probably does make for good couples material and the fact that Monique performs in two of the scenes (both boy/girl) should probably please her fans.
Monique’s first sex scene launches the movie, as she teams up with tattooed Derrick Pierce. Wearing a black dress and gold heels, she strips for Derrick, then proceeds to give him head. He gives her some oral, then turns her around for some standing doggy penetration. The pair move to another room with a bed, where she rides him cowgirl and takes it missionary style, ending with him jerking onto her body.
My favorite scene is next – primarily because it features two performers I’m not that familiar with, dark-haired Alicia Angel and newbie (and also dark-haired) Amber Ashley. The two girls get into a threesome with Jack Lawrence, where Amber gets most of the attention early on, first in the cowgirl position and then lifting her up into some standing cowgirl. Then, Jack alternates between the two in the missionary and doggy positions. We then get to see Alicia taking it up her ass missionary style, followed by Jack jerking onto her stomach. Amber licks up some of the cum and does a little kissing and cum swapping with Alicia.
After seeing Alicia in a threesome, seeing her doing a masturbation scene is kind of an anti-climax. Clearly, Paul Thomas would have been better off showing her masturbating before her big scene with Amber and Jack, but who am I to question the acclaimed director. Actually, before this solo scene takes place, Alicia is talking at the dinner table about how she likes to get off by stuffing four dildos into her pussy. Steven St. Croix calls “bullshit” on Alicia, and we jump to her masturbation scene. Of course, after hearing this conversation, we think we’re going to get to see Alicia put some dildos in her pussy, but we don’t even see one (let alone four) toy in her segment.
T.J. Hart is up next, joining Daryn Darby in a threesome with Christian (aka Christian XXX). This scene follows a dinner conversation about doing girls anally, so of course one expects to see some anal in the threesome, right? Wrong...neither girl takes it up the behind during this scene. There is some lesbian play during the action, as Christian basically takes turns with both girls, concluding with him jerking onto both of their chests.
Once again, Thomas chooses to show his solo masturbation scenes after the girls in question have their boy/girl scenes, so the next two segments have T.J and Daryn going solo. Once again, it’s finger-only masturbation for the two women, and once again it’s kind of anti-climatic.
The final scene is a coupling between Monique and Steven St. Croix that begins on a piano bench (with Monique also lying on top of the piano so Steven can lick her out) and winds up on the floor. Monique and Steven do reverse cowgirl, doggy and missionary here, ending with him jerking onto her body.
The best thing about Dinner Party is the video transfer. The movie has been shot using hi-def cameras, and gets a nice, solid anamorphic transfer on this DVD. Audio is presented in 2.0 Dolby, and is nicely mixed, with the dialogue easily heard. Extras on the DVD include five bonus scenes from other Vivid releases (two featuring Lacie Heart, and one each with Lanny Barby, Tawny Roberts and Stefani Morgan); a 15-minute behind the scenes featurette; a text biography for Monique; slide shows; and four trailers for other Vivid releases.
I think Paul Thomas had a pretty good idea here (gathering up some porn actors and just letting them talk about what turns them on), but the failure comes in the sexual pairings which just aren’t hot enough to make this movie stand out. It has enough of Monique Alexander to please her fans, but everyone else should put this in the “rental-only” category.
