BARELY LEGAL #38 is an unexceptional outing from the often imitated, groundbreaking, best-selling Hustler title. While I've been a general fan of this series since its original debut, the latter thirty-something volumes have been rather underwhelming, and number thirty-eight is further proof that some rejuvenation is needed. Though generally well-directed and tightly edited, there is a tired, uninspired feeling running throughout each encounter. Perhaps director Clive McLean has been at this for so long that he has no other choice other than to hack out thinly plotted vignettes that are as uninspiredmore… as the hardcore itself. I suppose that anyone who has never had the pleasure of viewing this series before might enjoy the sexual set-ups as well as Mr. McLean's directorial style, but I found the whole affair stiff (and not in a good way) and dull.
As with almost every episode, each clip begins with some situational storyline introduced by a voiceover, but this time from an attractive, uncredited blonde who reads letters addressed to BARELY LEGAL magazine. I was anxiously waiting for our charming hostess to participate in one of the scenes, but alas, she does not. (Perhaps it's because she's a few noticeable years older than the average BARELY LEGAL babe.) The titles of each encounter give viewers some general idea of the overall theme, so you can pretty much expect that "Sex Dance" deals with stripping and "Santa Cums Early" is about - what else? - X-Mas. Once you get past the contrivances, your appreciation of #38 will depend greatly on your attraction to the young performers who fuck and suck for your pleasure.
In the aforementioned "Sex Dance," Simone, a very sexy Puerto Rican who I enjoyed watching in POP THAT CHERRY #2 seduces Mark with a steamy, hands-on blowjob and a reverse cowgirl ride which goes on almost endlessly. She doesn't take it up the butt in this movie (actually, none of the girls do, so anal fans should beware!), which is more than a bit disappointing considering this is, after all, a Hustler title. Sadly, this lackluster moment is just a sign of things to come.
Cute brunette Kylie catches fellow employee spying on her while she tries on a Santa's Helper uniform in "Santa Cums Early." The wet kissing (which is becoming rare in straight flicks) is pretty hot, and Kylie proves to be an excellent, if distant, deep throater. Amazingly, her partner seems incapable of spilling more than a few meager drops of spunk in her otherwise eagerly awaiting mouth.
The very lucky Lucky gets double the pleasure and double the fun with Kat and Cherry in "We Whacked Him," which despite the title, has nothing to do with gangsters or anything criminal. The girls are introduced as early practitioners in the art of lesbian sex, and they share in some foreplay before inviting gardener, played by Lucky, into their bedroom. (This sort of thing happens to me every time I mow my lawn.) A double action blowjob leads into some sixty-nining and finger fucking, but other than a few vagina to mouth shots and some poorly aimed cum-swapping, nothing too lewd occurs here. (I also didn't find either actress too overwhelmingly attractive, either.)
In "Bicycle Babe" Haley, who has a cute overbite and an overall down and dirty charisma, has sex with Anthony, whose dialogue is buried to the point of intelligibility under his thick Hungarian accent. Her tight little body was tailor made for a good screwing, which he does in several creative positions (including a sideways variation of doggy-style). It's one of the better scenes, but it isn't that great.
Finally, Wendy gets it on with Tony in the "Love Seat," which is a standard affair notable only for her natural, girl-next-door cuteness. She and her guy read their lines like they were in a grade school play, but the sex is not too bad. Her hands-free, bobbing-head oral style is fun to watch, and the two get it on while perched on top of some red, playground device. Like all the rest of the girls, she takes a facial, but given the piddly quantity of semen shot from Tony's dick, it's nothing to write home about.
The bonus materials include the standard previews, photo gallery and cast information. The Director's Profile on Clive McLean is pretty much the same stuff we get from other Hustler discs. Far more surprising is the fact that the Behind The Scenes segment actually spotlights the main feature, as opposed to another volume of BARELY LEGAL (which was the strange practice for earlier editions). During an impromptu interview, Wendy comes off as warm, down-to-earth and personable. If I saw this segment before watching her scene, I might have felt more charitable towards the overall DVD.
While not a terrible DVD, I've definitely seen better. Even the most hardcore BARELY LEGAL fans will feel the sting of disappointment in #38.
