Both adult film and adult DVDs take a bold step forward in Nic Andrews’ Dark Angels, an incredibly well-directed and acted film that may only be surpassed by the quality of the disc that it is contained on. I’m usually skeptical when I hear that a film has garnered a number of AVN awards for its work…only to be disappointed when I actually get a chance to see the film on DVD…but Dark Angels is totally deserving of every award it has obtained to date, and I have the feeling that a few more may be in the film’s future, given this great 2-DVD set.
The movie opensmore… in a nightclub, where Ginger Paige lures Voodoo off the dance floor and into a bathroom stall. Despite the fact that this reviewer is never that enthralled with bathroom action in my adult titles (I like to keep my bodily functions separated, thank you very much), there’s some decent fun here, followed of course by Ginger chomping down on Voodoo’s neck with her pair of fangs!
We learn that Ginger is just a minion of a more powerful vampire, played by Sydnee Steele. She’s just as hungry as Ginger was, so she picks up an unsuspecting “John”, by pretending she’s a hooker. The “John” is played by Mike Horner, and while the vampires in this film like to kill their prey, at least they are nice enough to have sex with them before they feed!
Meanwhile, Jewel De’Nyle is driving through Los Angeles and dangerously low on gas. She pulls her car off the road and into and alley where…you guessed it…she witnesses Sydnee sucking the life-blood out of poor Mike. Brave little Jewel does what anyone would do in a situation like this: she high-tails her ass out of there and gets to the nearest police station.
At police headquarters we are introduced to Jack Cross, played by Dillion Day, who is assigned to the mysterious murder and also responsible for keeping his eye on Jewel. He takes her back to her place, but while he is sitting in his car outside, Jewel is sexually ravished by Syndee inside (in a really hot lesbian scene!) and drained of blood by the vampire. Dillion eventually hears her screams, gets her out of the house and to the nearest hospital…but Jewel dies in the emergency room.
Now, nine out of ten other adult reviewers would ruin the second half of Dark Angels for the rest of you, but this is one reviewer who is not going to do it. I will say that we haven’t seen the last of Jewel and that the vampire underground in Los Angeles is much bigger than you can possibly imagine. No, I won’t spoil the ending, but viewers are going to be treated to some fantastic special effects, some equally fantastic sex and perhaps the best fight sequence ever in adult film, as Dillion Day takes on an evil vampire played by Evan Stone.
As if getting the movie weren’t enough bang for your buck, you’ll also find two commentary tracks on the “A” disc, one of which features actual video of the commentary, which you can see in a small box on the bottom right side of your screen. The only other DVDs in which I’ve seen this cool feature is on some of Kevin Smith’s mainstream movies, so this is pretty cool stuff for adult DVD. The “A” disc also contains the shooting script of the film and the ability to jump from the script to the scene in the movie you are reading about.
The “B” disc is full of even more bonus features, including a 13-minute behind the scenes featurette, a 16-minute look at the design of Syndee Steele’s vampire suit (seen in the movie’s final minutes), a 13-minute reel that tells how the special effects were done and Evan Stone’s loop session, a humorous look at how Evan had to come back in after the film was shot and loop in the line “I think I just broke myself one!”
The “B” disc also contains three separate photo galleries, one for behind the scenes shots, one for production and one for the make-up effects. Additionally, there’s website information, magazine articles, reviews of the film and related articles concerning Dark Angels. My only complaint here is that the text is so small, anyone with less than a 30-inch TV is going to have trouble reading it! Finally, there are 10 trailers for other New Sensations titles.
In short, this is one loaded DVD set that is a must-have for any serious adult fan. It’s also one of the few porn movies I have ever watched where Mrs. Spooky has walked through the room and asked me if I was watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer again. “Umm…no honey, this is a porno.” “You’re kidding!” she replied. No, I’m not kidding…the movie is that damn good.
