Description
When it comes to highly stylized fetish videos like Tanya Hyde’s, the original intent can often be clouded or lost in the dizzying array of capabilities offered by recent innovations in video editing. With digital technology, creating the illusion of high production values is much easier and cheaper. For example, productions shot on video can be processed so they look like film, and numerous visual effects can be conjured at the push of a button. With that said, Tanya Hyde’s London Calling is an expertly designed and assembled piece of erotica But behind the editing room wizardry, standsmore… a pretty straight forward porno.
The feature is broken up into five independent vignettes. The first one (titled “Cunt Clinic”) starts off with some nasty girl/girl action involving Monique Covet, Bettina, and a reclining dental chair. Eventually a guy materializes, lying back with his legs in stirrups while Monique places a penis pump over his limp member and begins the inflation process. Once he’s hard, Bettina takes over where the pump left off while Monique inserts a stainless steel rod into his ass. If that’s too much for you, you’ll want to skip ahead before Bettina fucks him with a strap-on. He eventually returns the favor, giving both women a hard pounding before jacking his load all over their safety goggle adorned faces. Certainly a bizarre scene, and one of the disc’s highlights.
The rest of the scenes aren’t too memorable, but the last one is rather unique. “Two Fat Cocks and the Sleeping Cutie” begins with two freaky undertakers eyeing a girl (Chantelle) in a coffin. Fortunately, she’s only “sleeping” because she slightly responds when one of the guys straddles her chest and pokes his cock in her mouth. Little by little she comes to her senses as the two sexual scavengers have their way with her. Eventually they’re both chased off by the domineering Ingrid, dressed in black leather, a top hat, and a pink strap-on. After the two mingle for a few minutes, Chantelle seemingly vanishes while Ingrid takes on the two freaky assistants and a muscular guy wrapped in (what looks like) black plastic.
As previously mentioned, the stylized video effects can either be seen as artistic or overkill; I see it as the later. Most of the video is covered in a fog of intentional graininess which may effect the overall atmosphere, but can be frustrating for those looking for a crisp DVD quality picture. It does add a sort of dreamy quality to the scenes, but does little to enhance the action. There’s also frequent moments of color shifts which are also subjective, but I found them rather distracting.
However, I’d be willing to tolerate any of these effects if they simply provided a fluid frame rate. I suspect the jerky frame rate is an intentional effect to further mask the movie’s video origins. Though it could also be attributed to the production’s pretentious elitist attitude further displayed in the infrequent matted widescreen presentation. Instead of the 30 frame per second found in standard video, or the 24 frames per second in film, this video looks like it clocks in at around 10-15 frames per second. This gives the video a strobe like quality. The closest thing I can liken it to is watching a video clip over the internet. The image is still relatively crisp, it’s just the motion that isn’t smooth. Some people might be able to look beyond this, but I found it extremely distracting. I figured I’d get used to it, but I didn’t. It’s not right when the supplemental video shot for the “behind the scenes” featurette looks much better than the video in the actual movie.
Reservations aside, this is another strong DVD from Private. While the picture is a bit more grainy than I’d like to see, the effect is intentional and the DVD translates it pretty well. Likewise, the frame rate is a byproduct of director’s vision and not a technical defect. Even though the audio consists almost entirely of techno music, it’s mixed extremely well and produced in crisp stereo. The disc also features different audio tracks and subtitles in multiple languages, but there’s no real need for them since the disc is virtually void of dialogue. The extras include a nice behind the scenes featurette, some in-depth cast bios, some trailers, and a really crisp photo gallery. In addition, the menus are extremely well done and fit the disc’s overall theme and design.
Clearly, Tanya Hyde’s London Calling is an exceptionally well made feature and DVD. There’s no doubt that a ton of work went into making and editing it. Some will clearly love it, while others are left behind, distracted by the overtly ambitious editing techniques. Beyond the superficial, is a feature with five well shot and performed sex scenes with some truly unique set-ups. If you’re looking for something different, you’ve come to the right place; but don’t expect to be shocked beyond words.
